How Does a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Work?
An STP treats domestic wastewater from apartments, hospitals, hotels, and industrial facilities so that it meets CPCB/SPCB discharge norms or can be safely reused. A properly designed system continues to perform even when sewage flow changes during peak usage hours.
The process begins with screening and grit removal to take out plastics, solids, and heavy particles. Equalization then balances flow and load so that the system does not get disturbed by sudden changes in sewage quantity.
In the main treatment stage, biological systems like MBBR, SBR, or MBR break down organic pollutants under controlled aeration, reducing BOD, COD, and suspended solids.
