How Does a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Work?
A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) treats domestic wastewater to meet CPCB/SPCB discharge or reuse standards. However, effective STP design depends on actual hydraulic load, inlet BOD/COD levels, peak flow factor, and intended reuse application — not generic capacity assumptions.
The treatment process begins with screening and grit removal to eliminate floating and heavy solids. Equalization tanks then stabilize flow and organic load variations that typically occur due to occupancy changes and peak-hour discharge.
Wastewater then enters the biological treatment stage — Like MBBR, SBR, MBR — where microorganisms break down organic pollutants under controlled aeration. Key parameters such as MLSS, F/M ratio, dissolved oxygen, sludge age, and aeration efficiency are maintained to ensure stable BOD and COD reduction even during load fluctuations. Following biological treatment, secondary clarification separates treated water from biomass.
